Norma graduates from Compass Point Village

Evidence shows that people who have experienced chronic homelessness need at least a year to fully settle into life indoors—a fact we knew would be essential to the long-term success of residents in our Permanent Supportive Housing program.

After years of instability and unimaginable loss, Norma found safety and support when she moved into Compass Point Village in October 2023. Housing gave her the foundation to focus on her goals, including improving her health, rebuilding relationships, gaining confidence, and pursuing her desire to live more independently. Read her story here.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that Norma has graduated from Compass Point Village and transitioned into our Scattered Site program. Case Managers, volunteers, and residents at Compass Point Village all joined in to help Norma move into her brand-new apartment.

We’re proud of Norma and all that she’s accomplished, and we’re deeply grateful to our community for supporting Homeward Bound and helping make Compass Point Village a success. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact housing can have for those experiencing homelessness.

It’s a testament to Homeward Bound’s mission—and why our work must continue. Thank you.

Housing Placement Manager shares insight into post-Helene housing crisis in WNC

Tropical Storm Helene deeply impacted our community, worsening the already limited supply of affordable housing and pushing more individuals into street homelessness.

At Homeward Bound, our Housing Placement team is seeing fewer available units and longer wait times, just as more individuals and families, including veterans, exit FEMA's temporary shelter assistance program.

You can read more about the crisis and our response in this Carolina Public Press article.

"I feel a lot calmer about my future."

Steve's Story

Steve and his Case Manager, Brea

After a life of serving others, Steve was ready for a peaceful retirement. His 24-year career in psychiatric nursing and service in the Air Force had prepared him for a slower pace of life. He never expected a job promotion would lead to losing his apartment and moving into a veteran's shelter.

Shelter life gradually wore on Steve's sense of independence, but he stayed focused on finding resources and a path forward. Just as he entered his second year at the shelter, Steve heard a presentation from Homeward Bound’s Veterans Outreach team. They explained the Veterans Rapid Rehousing program, and Steve didn’t hesitate to ask for help.

Two years have passed since Homeward Bound moved Steve into his apartment in Swannanoa. His home is quiet, secure, and most importantly, housing gave him the stability to officially retire at 62.

“Moving into my own place provided a great sense of relief. I won’t have to look for and be desperate to find a place to settle. I feel a lot calmer about my future.” - Steve

Staff Spotlight: Jessie Beaver, SSVF Health Navigator

"As the SSVF Health Navigator, my role is to connect Veterans to VA medical services, or, if they do not qualify for those services, to community clinics such as Dale Fell Health Center and Minnie Jones Health Center.

When you think of Veteran healthcare, you would think those with medical services would also receive dental care, but that’s not the case.

A lot of our Veterans, whether they receive VA health care or not, have not been seen by a dentist in a very long time. In my years at Homeward Bound, we have successfully gotten 3 Veterans' teeth completely removed and FREE dentures put in. This is not a short process, and to see it come into fruition is truly a miracle and a blessing to watch.

Those memories of seeing clients with a beautiful new set of teeth will stay with me forever."
