Matthew was one of the 11 people in our supportive housing programs displaced during Hurricane Helene. We actually shared his story with our supporters three years ago in September 2022. At the time, Matthew’s life had changed after years of living on the streets and struggling with addiction, health issues, and legal trouble. Housed for 8 years, Matthew was proud of how far he had come, and although he says his past made him who he is, he was ready to leave some memories behind.
“I was close to being out of the homeless community, or even mentioning being homeless,” he shared. “I could say I was somebody. I was part of the system. I’m locked in a neighborhood. I’m no longer rootless.”
Matthew was re-housed in November, but the experience of losing everything again has changed his outlook and goals for the future. Yet, he remains resilient. He's certain that's he's never wanted to just "exist" or "survive" in life. He wants to live. |

“Interning at AHOPE gives me the opportunity to be a part of a community who supports humans and sees them as God sees them.”
Mia, a Hands and Feet of Asheville Fellow, serves our unhoused community members as an intern Case Manager at the AHOPE Day Center. She's been an amazing part of our homeless services team, and we're grateful for her heartfelt sincerity and commitment to our belief in the absolute value and worth of every human being.

Civilian Rapid Rehousing/HACA Program |
|
|
Last month, we met with our Civilian Rapid Rehousing/HACA Case Managers to learn more about their program and the important role it plays in the lives of people at risk of homelessness.
“We’ve helped a lot of people through small and major circumstances that could evict them and force them back to homelessness,” shares RRH/HACA Program Manager Amanda Thomas. “They have income or the potential to earn income; they just need that extra support. Having our folks prioritized is pretty critical.” |

If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time to RSVP to the 7th Annual HomeTrust Bank Open Your Heart to Women and Homelessness Luncheon on Valentine's Day, February 14, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church. The event is FREE and open to the community! Arrive early to chat, grab your seats, and enjoy a free lunch of sandwiches, soups, and salad.
This year’s theme, A Place to Grow, centers on how the stability of a home acts as the foundation for growth and opportunity to build a better future. A panel of community experts will share their insights, followed by a Q&A to deepen our understanding of the challenges and solutions surrounding women and homelessness.
