Post-Hurricane Updates

First, we'd like to thank every single one of our supporters for their efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We had dozens of individuals and organizations from all over reach out to donate food, water, clothing, and other essentials, as well as eagerly asking where and how they could help. All of this outreach and generosity supported our staff as they reconnected with our clients across Asheville and Buncombe County.

AHOPE Day Center

The AHOPE Day Center reopened the following Monday after the storm to provide our unhoused community a place to connect and access essentials, including food, clothing, drinking water, coffee, and restrooms. AHOPE now has power and water while under a boil advisory.

Compass Point Village

Our residents at Compass Point Village are deeply grateful for the donated generators, gray water tanks, canned goods, drinking water, and pet supplies. Dozens of community members stepped up, delivering these essentials directly to our carport. Your generosity has allowed all 86 residents of Compass Point Village to maintain a sense of normalcy until water and power were restored on 10/14.

Clients Housed Across Buncombe County

Thanks to the amazing efforts of our Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Re-Housing Case Managers, all of our housed clients are safe and accounted for. Within hours of the storm, they reached out to their clients, performed wellness checks, delivered essential items, and connected them with clean water stations, food supply hubs, and other resources.

Unfortunately, four housed clients were displaced due to the storm. Thankfully, they are safe and recovering with family members and at shelters.

Alex & Kortney

"We're better than ever!"

Alex and Kortney moved their family to Asheville for a new job opportunity, but when the job fell through, they found themselves struggling to secure stable housing. As their savings dwindled and stress mounted, they turned to Homeward Bound's Veterans Program. With the support of their case manager and their own determination, their journey shows how far a little hope can go.

Sam & Melanie

"Melanie and I have volunteered at the Welcome Home Donation Center since 2019 when we heard about Homeward Bound from our realtor.

We support this organization because we believe in its Mission, and we’ve seen the good things that have been accomplished since we started here. We enjoy interacting with the people from the community who drop off donations at the center, and also with the Case Workers who come by to pick up orders.

Melanie’s specialty is sorting through the donations that have come in and keeping the center organized. I enjoy filling any orders that may be needed for the Case Workers and in keeping the consumables section stocked and organized. We always look forward to seeing Terry and Josh, who keep the center running great day-to-day."

Thank You, Sam and Melanie for your time and compassion!

Support From Our Community

We are so grateful for our partnership with the Asheville Police Department and the support of Chief Mike Lamb. APD shares the words below:

"The Asheville Police Department recognizes the progress made through our partnerships with Homeward Bound and other service providers. We believe our responses are contributing to meaningful improvements for this population of formerly houseless individuals. Through community policing, we’re helping connect people to essential services and addressing underlying issues.

This collaborative approach not only assists individuals in need but also enhances the overall safety and well-being of the community.

With the introduction of permanent supportive housing at Compass Point Village, we have observed a reduction in calls for service related to law enforcement matters involving those experiencing homelessness across the broader community. We have also noticed a reduction in calls regarding individuals who live at CPV. Those same individuals generated calls regularly when they were unhoused and on the streets."
