Our HOP Program is Live!

Homeward Bound is now participating in the Healthy Opportunities Pilot (HOP), a groundbreaking Medicaid program launched to demonstrate the effectiveness of addressing critical social needs—such as housing, food, transportation, and personal safety—before they contribute to serious and costly medical conditions.

What this means for Homeward Bound:

Thanks to HOP, we're able to identify individuals within our programs who can benefit from the pilot's services and receive reimbursement from Medicaid for housing/utility security deposits and housing case management. HOP also connects us with a support network of over 50 community-based organizations serving 18 counties across Western North Carolina!

Learn more about the program on the NCDHHS website or through Impact Health, the Network Lead in WNC.

Chayse S.

“It puts a ‘little bean of hope’ in their day“

Chayse is one of the most resilient people I’ve met, and her journey is a powerful testament to determination and self-growth. Her story takes us through her experiences crisscrossing the country aboard trains, finding shelter wherever she could—including rooftops and under bridges during record snow-falls and heat waves—to earning her GED, pursuing a degree in human services at AB-Tech, and working toward a career as a case manager to support people she personally knows who are still homeless today.

Alan Steinberg

Alan has volunteered at the AHOPE Day Center twice a week for nearly 10 years, and he's been an incredible help in many ways, including assisting AHOPE with the transition from bins to lockers and folders during the pandemic.

He also stops by between his shifts to fix anything that needs repairs, keeps the porch clean, donates food, coffee, and tools, and frequently hosts get-togethers for the staff. Recently, he joined the Homeward Bound of WNC Board of Directors!

Thank you, Alan, for all that you do!

Permanent Supportive Housing: Compass Point Village

September 21st Marks Compass Point Village's First Anniversary!

An Interview with Housing Services Director, Jenny Moffat

"My role with Compass Point Village has shifted from focusing on getting it built and opened for 18 months to now focusing more on the resident experience. I’m looking at questions like, ‘How are tenants settling into their new homes? What services are they using the most, and what might we want to add? Are we helping residents build community and friendships?’

While the planning, interior design work, and fundraising tours were exciting before opening, the season we are in now is what I was waiting for—being able to see folks who’ve been outside for 5, 10, 15 years finally having a home and getting to share in their journey to stability.

Watching one client in particular, Ed, who had no friends or community when he moved in, go from sitting in the courtyard alone to being encircled by new friends, both staff and residents, seeing him relax and enjoy the new community—those are true stand-out memories for me. I really can’t imagine any work accomplishment in my life I could be more proud of than being a part of this project." - Jenny Moffat

In case you missed it, watch Compass Point. This short documentary tells the story of Ed, Maureen, and Leann before and after they move to Compass Point Village.

Roy W.

"I'm having it real good"

Roy is from Haywood County and was homeless for nearly 30 years before moving to Compass Point Village in September 2023. Since moving, Roy has found peace and privacy thanks to his new home. He also loves to show off some of his favorite items in his apartment, including his wolf-themed blanket and calendar, a collection of walking sticks and found trinkets, and a picture of Steven Tyler from Aerosmith.

Click to read more about Roy in Spectrum News!

Roy's Home sign hangs in front of his front door for everyone to see as they walk in.

"I've done real well here. I've got a roof over my head, a place I know I can go. I'm back on Medicaid and food stamps, I go to the mobile clinic when they come by, and I've been working on getting on social security. I'm even thinking about getting a cat.

Everybody with Homeward Bound is nice to me. They take me to the grocery store and always speak to me. Ryan (his case manager) has been helping a lot and gets me anything I need. I'm having it real good." - Roy

What we're low on this month

  • Hand brooms/dustpans
  • Hand/face/body lotion
  • Floor cleaner
  • Small tables
  • Deodorant
  • Aluminum foil/Plastic wrap

Cleaning supplies, toiletries, and hygiene items are some of our most in-demand items, and donations like these help us stretch our resources even further.
