James was living in Florida when COVID hit and he lost the ability to keep a roof over his head. With no nearby friends or family, he packed his things and began searching for a stable home and a sense of belonging. His journey took him to Detroit, Kentucky, Eastern Tennessee, and finally Brevard, NC, where he enrolled in a year-long rehab program.
However, the program wasn't what he expected. A month later, James was dropped off at the Asheville Airport with $5 and a short piece of advice from his driver: "Find 19 North Ann and you'll be okay." |

"When I returned to Asheville early last year, I noticed individuals experiencing homelessness panhandling and began researching non-denominational organizations focused on providing assistance. Homeward Bound's housing success rate was impressive, so I decided to volunteer at the AHOPE Day Center to learn more about the organization from the ground up and meet the people we are helping.
Now that I’ve gotten to know the wonderful staff members and am becoming acquainted with those we serve, I look forward to identifying additional ways to contribute." - Murray |

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 10.4 million Americans spend half or more of their income on housing, forcing them to choose between shelter, food, and other basic needs. For those experiencing homelessness, these choices become even more difficult. Hunger and homelessness often intensify one another, creating a cycle of physical and emotional challenges.
Organizations like Food Connection, Equal Plates Project, and World Central Kitchen are working to change that, and we witness their impact every day.

Most people who are homeless have few or no belongings or furnishings, so when we move individuals and families into their new homes, we provide a house full of clean, gently used furniture and household items donated by our community. |
Items we're always in need of: |
Cleaning supplies, toiletries, and hygiene items are some of our most in-demand items, and donations like these help us stretch our resources even further. |
| What we're low on this month: |
- Cold weather gear: Thick gloves, beanies, insulated jackets, scarves, etc.
- Hand and feet warmers: These are a lifeline for our unhoused neighbors this cold season.
- AHOPE needs coffee and creamer.
