This month, we're grateful to share the story of Brooke and Kelso, a couple who have lived at Homeward Bound's Compass Point Village for over seven months. Brooke and Kelso met while they were both homeless in Asheville. Each carries a history of addiction, violence, abandonment, and mental health challenges.

The couple is focused on settling into their new home and embracing the space they now have to rest and recover. They access medical and behavioral healthcare through Appalachian Mountain Health, our on-site medical partner. Their case manager, Erin, is helping connect Brooke to disability benefits. More than anything, both of them want to get back into the workforce. Brooke is especially driven to earn her own income, so she can pay rent.

Both of them value the opportunity to heal from their experiences. For Kelso, Brooke’s safety and well-being matter most.

“It’s a relief,” he says. “It’s nice knowing that no matter what, she has housing more than anything.”

We are so grateful to all the residents, staff, and volunteers who have helped with gardening and landscaping at Compass Point Village (CPV). These moments help make the place feel like home.

Thank you to the Houseplants for Happiness group from Warren Wilson College for donating houseplants to residents at CPV.

We're excited to announce that we've added a new staff member to our Street Outreach team, increasing our total Outreach team to 6 people.

This will have a notable impact on our work to provide support, resources, and pathways to housing to our unsheltered neighbors across all 656 square miles of Buncombe County. Click here to access our Outreach services.

Thanks to your support, during March and April, Homeward Bound moved 14 households into safe and stable homes.

This includes families like Steven, Destyni, and their two sons, who signed their new lease in late April with the support of our Supportive Services for Veteran Families Rapid Rehousing program.

Our Welcome Home Donation Center is in urgent need of the following items. All household and furniture donations will go straight into new homes for people who are exiting or avoiding homelessness. 

Community members can drop off items at any time using our donation bins. You can also call or email our team to schedule a pickup. 

Homeward Bound is so grateful to be East Fork Pottery's Community Partner this spring.

To support our work, proceeds of all sales made during April, May, and June will help fund our Housing and Homeless Services programs.

Additionally, customers can donate an additional amount to Homeward Bound during checkout.

Along with our new branding, we’ve updated our website to better serve our community. Visitors will now find more detailed information about our homelessness and housing programs, a timeline that reflects our deep roots in Western North Carolina, and easy-to-access “Get Help” pages designed to connect neighbors quickly with housing assistance, Outreach services, and community resources.

Thank you again to everyone who attended the 14th Annual Welcome Home Luncheon, and to those who donated to our A Home Changes Everything campaign. 

Your support helped us raise $105,191. We’re also happy to share that our full challenge gift of $200,000 from an anonymous donor has been fulfilled, which will help provide stable, permanent homes for our neighbors in need. Thank you.

April 19 through April 25 was National Volunteer Week! Our volunteers joined us at Highland Brewing to celebrate their impact on our community. Thank you for all that you do!

It was wonderful seeing folks come together to discuss homelessness, housing, and other issues at our Open Forum. Based on your feedback, we plan to host additional conversations like these in our regular event schedule. Stay tuned for more!

We were so happy to partner with Mosaic Realty on their Third Annual Art Walk & Benefit. Thank you to everyone who purchased raffle items to help support our work. Mosaic raised a total of $28,523 in donations for all 11 nonprofit partners.

The WNC Bridge Foundation is hosting its fourth Annual WNC Community Non-Profit Yard Sale. Our Donation Center team will be selling items that we can not use for move-ins. All proceeds will go toward our programs.
