For 13 years, James “Jim” Lowder served as a pillar of our organization’s success as our Development Director, Interim Executive Director, and Strategic and Major Gifts Officer. His contributions to our organization were invaluable, and the relationships he developed often turned into lasting friendships for so many of us. With blessings from him and his family, we have established the James Lowder Fund for Ending Homelessness to honor Jim’s legacy.
This endowment fund supports the future of Homeward Bound of WNC and continues Jim’s passion to provide stable housing and support to our most vulnerable neighbors in Western North Carolina.

Homeward Bound is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Nicholas Poulos. Nicholas was a dedicated and passionate advocate for our mission to end homelessness in our community through housing and support. During his nearly 3 years as our Rapid Rehousing Case Manager, he helped countless individuals exit homelessness, find stability in a new home, and build the tools needed to navigate barriers and pursue new opportunities.
Nicholas was also an active participant in our local Continuum of Care, the collaborative responsible for developing and implementing strategies to address homelessness in Buncombe County. He approached this work not simply as a job, but as a reflection of who he was—deeply committed, compassionate, and driven by a belief in community. Nicholas leaves behind a lasting legacy and a culture rooted in collaboration, care, and the shared work of building community together.
With blessings from his family, we have established the Nicholas Poulos Fund for Rapid Rehousing to honor Nicholas’ commitment to serving our community’s most vulnerable neighbors. This fund supports Homeward Bound’s Rapid Rehousing program and the people Nicholas served as a Case Manager at our organization.

A win-win for taxpayers and Homeward Bound – if you are 70 ½ or older, you can make an IRA transfer of up to $111,000 directly to Homeward Bound and claim it as a tax-free IRA Charitable Rollover gift by following these guidelines:
You must be 70 ½ or older when you make the gift and it must be from an IRA. Retirement plans such as 401(K), 403(b), SIMPLE or SEP accounts do not qualify.
Transfers can count toward your required minimum distribution.
You may contribute up to $100,000 per individual, per year. Thus spouses or partners can each give around $111,000 from separate IRA accounts.
Distributions must be made directly to Homeward Bound of WNC and completed by Dec. 31.
The IRA charitable distribution is not included in your taxable income, so there is no charitable deduction available.
The IRA charitable distribution may be used to fulfill a pledge.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a simple, flexible, and tax-efficient way to support our mission. If you have a DAF, you can recommend a grant to support our work and make an immediate difference in our community.
Why Give Through a Donor-Advised Fund?
Simple and Convenient
Recommending a grant is easy. Log into your DAF account, select our organization, and designate the amount you’d like to give.
Flexible Timing
You can contribute to your donor-advised fund when it makes sense for you and recommend grants to support our work at any time.
Potential Tax Advantages
You may have already received a charitable tax deduction when you contributed to your DAF. Grants made from your fund allow you to put those charitable dollars to work supporting our mission.
Strategic Giving
A DAF allows you to organize your charitable giving in one place and support multiple organizations from a single account.
